TARGETED SKILLS: Memory Skills, Spaced Repetition, Emotional Buy-In
Traveling in a car, the child flips through cards on a ring (math facts, spelling words, vocabulary, etc.) only when the car comes to a stop. Stopping can occur at stop signs, stop lights, and in congested traffic. The parent announces the upcoming stop light or site. The child gets the cards from the pocket in the car and holds them in anticipation of the car stopping. Once the car comes to a halt, the child flips through the cards reading or saying them out loud depending on the age of the child. When the car moves forward the child stops at the last card flipped and counts the number of cards reviewed. When the parent announces the next stop, the cards are repeated from the beginning. After the arrival at school, church, home or store, the child can report on the largest number of cards reviewed at one time during the trip. Repetition with excitement, setting and breaking goals, and focusing are fun benefits from this activity. Several rings of words, facts, or pictures can be kept in the car at all times. New sets help keep high interest in the activity. If you are not in the car together everyday make one or more consistent days in the car stop-light learning days.

Make it fun. Make it quick. Make it easy to succeed!
STEPS:
- Purchase or make flash cards. The child can help on the selection or construction. Picture cards are more interesting.
- Place the cards on a large ring so that flipping them is easy. The number of cards is dependent on the age of the child.
- Place several groups of cards on rings and place them in the pocket close to where the child rides in the card.
- Rotate out rings of cards for variety.
- Optional: Obtain word lists from your child’s teacher on upcoming subjects so that familiarity of terms can be established before the actual lesson.
